Chronic Pain Q & A

What is chronic pain?

Chronic pain is long-lasting pain that doesn’t subside on its own. The pain might be mild or severe, and can last several weeks, months, or even years if left untreated. Chronic pain may present as:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder or elbow pain
  • Knee pain
  • Hip pain
  • Wrist or ankle pain
  • Other joint pain
  • Sciatica
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Fibromyalgia pain

Chronic pain might be due to arthritis, osteoporosis, another chronic disease, a sports-related injury, a fall, or being in an automobile accident.

How is chronic pain diagnosed?

Schedule an appointment with Advanced Pain Management if you experience chronic or severe pain of any kind. Dr. Gupta and his team review your symptoms and medical history and complete a physical exam.

They use blood tests, CT scans, X-rays, MRIs, or other imaging procedures to find the root cause of your pain and establish a personalized pain management solution that’s right for you.

What is the treatment for chronic pain?

Dr. Gupta might recommend one or more of the following chronic pain treatments based on the type and severity of your discomfort:

Physical therapy

Physical therapy helps relieve pain naturally and can prevent future injuries. Your provider shows you strength and flexibility exercises to complete in-office and at home between appointments.

Radiofrequency neurotomy

Radiofrequency neurotomy is a procedure in which Dr. Gupta uses a thin needle to emit radiofrequency energy into painful areas of your body. Doing so heats tissues and reduces pain signals from nerves to your brain.

Anti-inflammatory medicines

Taking medications can reduce inflammation associated with chronic pain, to help optimize the way you feel and restore your quality of life.

Injections

Dr. Gupta might recommend steroid, anesthetic, hyaluronic acid, nerve block, or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections to relieve discomfort and optimize healing.

Spinal cord stimulation

Spinal cord stimulation uses a tiny device to emit electrical impulses into our spinal cord to reduce pain signals to your brain.

Minimally invasive procedures

Dr. Gupta might recommend percutaneous discectomy or other minimally invasive procedures to relieve nerve pressure or repair tissues in muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, or joints.
